FROM THE HEART OF THE GAXIOLAS...

Updated: February 1, 2010

This evening we watched the program Extreme Home Makeover. We're sure most of you are familiar with the show. If not, a group of celebrities come in and re-do, from the ground up, someone's home. Every family that they rebuild a home for is in terrible need. Sometimes the family in need may have serious illness, tremendous financial burden, truly extreme life trauma and tragedy.

As we watched this show, the thought came to mind that, in a spiritual sense, we are all in need of an extreme makeover, sometimes on a daily basis. We are all selfish and sinful creatures in need of help. We have big decisions to make, we have children with needs beyond what we have the answers for, we don't have the strength to get up in morning sometimes and face another day. We don't cooperate with one another, husbands and wives may not love and respect one another all the time, children don't always obey their parents. We try and fail, try and fail, and are tempted to give up.

This is when we need the love and mercy of our Lord to come and do His Extreme Makeover. We need Him to come in and demolish all the selfish desires and self-motivating efforts and have Jesus remodel our hearts and homes. Actually, on the show we mentioned, they demolish the house and rebuild the foundation many times. What foundations are our houses built on?  What is first place in our lives and what cornerstone is everything else resting on? The Bible says in 1 Cor. 3:11 "for no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ." Is Jesus Christ the foundation of your family? Is He the Cornerstone that all else is built on in your heart and home? Is He the One that is rebuilding every room in your heart and in the life of your family day-to-day?

Prayer, time spent with Him in His Word, fellowshipping with the Master Builder is the only way for a house to stand. It is the only way to have a foundation that will not crack under the pressures of life. Remember, we have been talking about character over academics this past month. Be an imitator of Christ by spending time with the Father, knowing Him in a deeper way and receiving His wisdom on how your house should be built.

Psalm 127:1a says "Unless the Lord builds the house, they labor in vain who build it." Take the time to sit at Jesus feet this month and show your children how wonderful it is to spend time with Him. It is truly the Eternal Home Makeover that will bring shelter in any storm and joy for the journey God has called you to!

Yours in the journey,
The Gaxiolas
