    How to Conquer Bad Habits

    in Family advice

Here is yet another bundle of advice from S.M. Davis. I won't bother blabbing about it, but will simply post his worksheet/outline for his sermon. They are not fleshed out at all, but I think you can get the point of it without that.

How to Conquer Strong, Evil Habits

    Dr. S. M. Davis

Romans 12: 21 says, “Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.”

We are all creatures of habit.

Many people find themselves in a vicious, guilt-filled cycle.

Romans 7:15, “For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.”

1 – Admit that it is sin.

Occasionally God cures a disease, but God gives sure cures for sin.

Proverbs 28:13 says, “He that covereth his sins shall not prosper:”

People cover sin by excusing it.

You can be tied to a sin so tightly that it is like it becomes a part of you. A person who becomes addicted to lying is a liar. A person who becomes addicted to stealing is a thief. A person addicted to alcohol is a drunkard.

“Habit is a cable. We weave a thread of it every day and at last we cannot break it.”

2 – You have to really want victory.

James 1:8: “A double minded man is unstable in all his ways.”

    Sins tangle themselves together.

“Temptation is God’s x-ray machine, discovering hidden conflicts that need attention.”

3 – Believe that it is possible to be delivered.

God’s promise in Genesis 3:15 is that Satan’s power can be crushed.

Every sin you can name, somebody has gotten victory over it.

You should get deliverance now, not later.

Do not allow sin to entrench itself in your life and not thoroughly deal with it in your youth.

4 – Tell yourself the right things.

Romans 12:2 says, “be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind.”

Your thoughts create your feelings which in turn affect your behavior.

5 – Memorize the Scriptures necessary to give you victory.

Each time Jesus encountered Satan He quoted Scripture to him.

Memorize Romans chapter 6 and quote it in the first person.

6 – Put something good in the place of that which is bad.

Romans 12:21, “Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.”

7 – Pray to be delivered from temptation, not just from the sin.

The best way to be delivered from evil is to stay away from temptation.

8 – Stay away from the place of temptation.

    9 – Make yourself accountable.

Hebrews 3:13, “But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin.”

“Accusations attack the will, but questions prick the conscience.”

10 – Realize that the goal is not victory over a bad habit. The goal is to get to know God better.

God put an empty spot in your soul that can only be filled by Him.
